Class Descriptions

Ballet/Pointe: Ballet is the form of dance in which all others derive. Ballet is the most highly recommended class any student can take as it builds correct body alignment, core strength, flexibility, posture & discipline that is required for all forms of dance. Dancers learn proper training during barre, floor & center exercises while gaining knowledge & respect for the art form. Dancers progress to Pointe after several years of Ballet & with recommendation/approval.

Broadway: A style of dance that combines Jazz style of dance with the Theatre, Broadway dance is expressive, dramatic & theatrical. Dancers learn movement through the company of acting & Jazz technique.

Company/Competition: These classes are offered to dancers who choose a more intense training atmosphere. These students are accepted through a try-out process and take part in supplemental training as well as 4-5 local competitions throughout the year. Attendance is a mandatory for these classes & rehearsals.

Contemporary: Contemporary is one of the fastest growing styles of dance today! Dancers learn strength & control in different ways of movement in body shapes & lines. Contemporary does not tell the story of Lyrical dance but does derive from Jazz dance as well. Choreography is more edgy in Contemporary dance.

Hip-Hop: Hip Hop offers an up-beat & fun style of dance with isolations, pop-n-lock & break dance incorporated. Students learn choreography and movement similar to hat they see in music videos & more commonly seen on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew & So You Think You Can Dance

Jazz: Jazz dance is an umbrella term that can refer to several related dance styles. All of them are connected via common roots, namely tap, ballet, jazz music, and African-American rhythms and dance. Ballet is required for this form of dance.

Lyrical: Lyrical is an expressive form of dance that fuses Jazz movement with the technique of Ballet. Choreography tells a story through fluid & graceful movement. Dancers develop chore strength and flexibility. Ballet dance is strongly recommended to accompany & compliment this style of dance.

Modern: Made popular by Martha Graham & Alvin Ailey, Modern dance explores movement through principles of fall & recovery and of contraction & release. It’s a style of theatrical dance that rejects the limitations of classical ballet and favors movement deriving from the expression of inner feeling.

Tap: Style of American theatrical dance using precise rhythmical patterns of foot movement and audible foot tapping. It is derived from the traditional clog dance of northern England, the jigs and reels of Ireland and Scotland, and the rhythmic foot stamping of African dances. Ballet training is not required for this style of dance but is always recommended.

Tumble Ballet: Offered to boys & girls ages 3-5 years, young dancers learn & explore movement in early gymnastics (tumbling) and ballet.
